About P.A.D.: Women and P.A.D.: What American Women Know About P.A.D.
What American Women Know About P.A.D.
- More than three out of four women surveyed (72 percent) are not familiar with P.A.D.
- Women are much more likely to be aware of other cardiovascular diseases such as stroke (74 percent), coronary artery disease (65 percent), and heart failure (67 percent), although the risk for P.A.D. is identical or higher than these conditions.
- Women are more aware of relatively rare diseases that affect far fewer people, including multiple sclerosis (44 percent), Lou Gehrig’s Disease (36 percent) and cystic fibrosis (31 percent).
- Many women who reported that they are aware of P.A.D. do not know that cigarette smoking (43 percent) and diabetes (50 percent) can lead to P.A.D.
- More than half of those familiar with P.A.D. are unaware that high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol are risk factors for P.A.D.
- Among women who are aware of P.A.D., 27 percent know that the condition is associated with an increased risk of heart attack, 28 percent know it is related to stroke risk, and only 14 percent link PAD with either a risk of amputation or death.
