Best P.A.D. Research Award

Celebrating the Best Published Research Contributing to the Understanding and Treatment of Peripheral Arterial Disease

Background
Peripheral arterial disease (P.A.D.) is a prevalent disease that affects approximately 9 million Americans and over 30 million individuals internationally. P.A.D. is known to markedly increase the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, amputation, and death, and to diminish quality of life for affected individuals. P.A.D. is thus a major contributor to adverse public health outcomes. The translation of basic scientific advances to clinical knowledge regarding P.A.D. is a central element that would improve cardiovascular health.

The P.A.D. Coalition seeks to identify, on an annual basis, the most important contributions to P.A.D. clinical research. The public and health professionals are best served when novel hypotheses are formulated, data carefully collected and analyzed, valuable scientific advances are identified by peer review, and new knowledge is published for public use. This award will assist investigators, medical journals, the media, and the public by highlighting these knowledge-based values.

Award Purpose
To reward the work of investigators and acknowledge the creation of new clinical research that is relevant to the understanding and/or treatment of peripheral arterial disease.

Criteria
Nominated research papers should have provided a novel insight into the mechanism of lower extremity atherosclerosis; mechanisms of progression; detection of P.A.D. in populations; the impact of P.A.D. on limb symptoms or quality of life; psychosocial effects of the disease; economic or health services impact; or impact of this disease on systemic rates of myocardial infarction, stroke, or amputation. These categories are not intended to be all inclusive and additional arenas of research may be equally worthy of recognition. This award is intended to highlight human studies, though selected basic investigations will also be selectively considered.

Nominations
Any member of the Coalition’s member organizations can nominate one top rated article in each of the award categories. Articles must have been published between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2007. Award winners will be determined by members of the P.A.D. Coalition’s Science Committee. The final selections will be based on the quality of the research and its potential impact on the understanding and/or treatment of peripheral arterial disease.

Award Categories
Acknowledging that comparison of research value across disciplines is challenging, nominations will be accepted in the following three award categories:

Epidemiology/Preventive Medicine

Vascular medicine

Vascular interventions
