The Society of Interventional Radiology is a national organization of physicians, scientists, and allied health professionals dedicated to improving public health through disease management and minimally invasive, image-guided therapeutic interventions.
Interventional radiologists are board-certified physicians who specialize in minimally invasive, targeted treatments. They use X-rays, MRI, and other imaging to advance a catheter in the body, usually in an artery, to treat at the source of the disease non-surgically. As the inventors of selective catheterization, peripheral angioplasty, and stenting in the 1950s and 1960s, interventional radiologists pioneered the non-surgical treatment of PAD and minimally invasive modern medicine.
Certified in both diagnostic radiology and vascular and interventional radiology, interventional radiologists provide a uniquely diverse expertise that combines multi-modality imaging and diagnosis, coupled with broad clinical experience across specialties and in-depth knowledge of the least invasive treatments.
